Seven Charged After Drugs and Weapons Seized From West Broadway Home: Winnipeg Police
Seven people are facing multiple criminal charges after Winnipeg police discovered drugs and weapons during a search of a West Broadway residence linked to suspected drug trafficking.
According to a police news release issued Friday, officers executed a search warrant on Wednesday at a home on Young Street, just south of Portage Avenue, after receiving complaints from community members about alleged illegal activity at the property.
Weapons, Drugs and Cash Recovered
During the search, officers seized two sawed-off shotguns, ammunition, several swords and machetes, approximately one ounce of fentanyl, two grams of crack cocaine, and about $1,600 in cash.
CBC News reported seeing a significant police presence at the location on Wednesday afternoon, including multiple officers, police vehicles, the service’s armoured vehicle and a police dog.
Seven People Face Multiple Charges
Police charged two men, aged 53 and 32, along with three women aged 29, 27 and 26, with several firearms-related offences. They also face charges of possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000.
In addition, the 53-year-old man and the 27-year-old and 39-year-old women were charged with possession of a weapon and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
All five individuals remain in custody.
Two other women, aged 29 and 40, were charged with similar offences but were released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
Police Explain Multiple Charges
Winnipeg police spokesperson Claude Chancy said it is not unusual for everyone present during a search warrant execution to face charges when officers discover illegal drugs at the scene.
He also noted that a single firearms offence can result in multiple criminal charges depending on the circumstances of the investigation.
The Winnipeg police investigation led to the seizure of illegal firearms, drugs and cash, resulting in charges against seven individuals.
Authorities say the operation followed community complaints about suspected drug trafficking, and the investigation remains part of ongoing efforts to address crime in the area.
