ASIRT Investigating After Man Shot by RCMP Officer Responding to Domestic Call
Alberta’s police watchdog has opened an investigation after a man was fatally shot while officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call at a rural property northeast of Calgary.
The incident happened near Irricana, and the investigation is now being handled by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.
RCMP Responded to Domestic Disturbance Call
According to ASIRT, two officers went to the rural home last Friday after RCMP received a call from a woman.
The woman reported a domestic disturbance involving her boyfriend.
Woman Came Out of the Home
ASIRT said that as the officers approached the residence, they heard yelling from inside.
A short time later, the woman came out through the front door.
The officers remained outside near the entrance and called for the man to come out.
Man Allegedly Approached Officers With Handgun
The agency said the man did not respond at first.
Minutes later, he came outside and began walking toward the officers while holding what appeared to be a handgun.
Officer Fired Multiple Shots
ASIRT said one officer discharged his service pistol several times, striking the man.
After the shooting, officers gave first aid and called emergency medical services.
Paramedics later pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Body Camera Footage Captured Incident
ASIRT confirmed that the shooting was recorded on both officers’ body-worn cameras.
The footage is expected to be reviewed as part of the watchdog’s investigation.
Investigation Will Review Police Use of Force
The agency said its investigation will focus on whether the officers’ use of force was lawful and appropriate under the circumstances.
ASIRT investigates serious incidents involving police officers in Alberta, including deaths, serious injuries and allegations of misconduct.
The fatal shooting near Irricana is now under review by Alberta’s police watchdog. ASIRT says officers were responding to a domestic disturbance when the man came outside holding what appeared to be a handgun.
