Ontario Break-and-Enter Investigation Leads to Two Arrests After Trip-Wires Found

Two people from Quinte West are facing multiple charges after Ontario Provincial Police discovered trip-wires on a Parks Canada property in Trenton, Ontario.

Police say the wires had been set up to discourage people from entering the area and were safely dismantled by officers.

Police Investigated Recent Break-In

The incident unfolded on July 3, 2026, when OPP officers attended a Parks Canada property on Subway Road in Trenton.

The OPP Community Street Crime Unit was assisted by the Tactics and Rescue Unit, the Emergency Response Team and the Canine Unit as part of an investigation into a recent theft or break-and-enter in the Quinte West area.

Trip-Wires Found and Removed

During the investigation, police found trip-wires that had allegedly been placed to stop or deter people from entering a specific area.

Officers safely disarmed and dismantled the wires before anyone was injured.

Two Quinte West Residents Charged

Police arrested Calvin Patrick, 40, and Shane Turncliffe, 44, both from Quinte West.

Both were charged with creating traps likely to cause bodily harm.

Additional Charges Laid

Patrick was also charged with two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, possession of methamphetamine and mischief by destroying or damaging property.

Turncliffe also faces two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order and a mischief charge.

Court Date Scheduled

Police said both accused were released from custody.

They are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on August 13, 2026.

Allegations Not Proven in Court

The charges remain allegations at this stage.

Both accused are presumed innocent unless and until the allegations are proven in court.

The discovery of trip-wires on a Parks Canada property in Trenton led to serious charges against two Quinte West residents.

OPP say the devices were safely removed during an investigation into a recent break-in or theft, preventing possible injuries. With firearm-related, drug and mischief charges also laid, the case will now proceed through the courts in Belleville.
