Officials Report 180 Active Wildfires Still Burning Across Northern Ontario

Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources has confirmed that 180 active wildfires are currently burning across the northern part of the province.

Seven additional fires were reported in a single day, adding further pressure to emergency crews and affected communities.

Namaygoosisagagun First Nation Suffers Major Destruction

Aerial images have revealed extensive damage in Namaygoosisagagun First Nation, also known as Collins First Nation, after a wildfire swept through the area last week.

The photographs show burned land, scattered debris and empty spaces where homes and other buildings previously stood. Residents were forced to flee the community, reportedly without evacuation assistance from the Ontario government.

First Nations Leaders Demand Public Inquiry

First Nations leaders have accused the provincial government of failing to provide timely evacuation support. They claim several northern communities were left to manage the emergency largely on their own while wildfires continued to destroy large areas of forest.

Indigenous leaders are now calling for a public inquiry into Ontario’s wildfire response. They want the province’s evacuation planning, emergency communication and assistance for remote First Nations communities to be independently reviewed.

Ontario Government Defends Wildfire Response

Premier Doug Ford has defended the provincial government’s actions, stating earlier this week that authorities did everything possible to respond to the emergency.

Provincial officials have also explained that some fires spread so rapidly that they were not detected until they were already dangerously close to First Nations communities.

Evacuees Warned Against Returning Home

Ford has urged wildfire evacuees not to return to their communities while evacuation orders and road closures remain in effect.

Ontario Provincial Police warned on Wednesday that anyone entering restricted areas could face fines worth hundreds of dollars. Drivers who ignore closure signs may also receive three demerit points on their licences for failing to obey posted road restrictions.

With 180 wildfires still active across northern Ontario, officials continue to warn residents about serious safety risks. The destruction in Namaygoosisagagun First Nation has also intensified concerns about evacuation support and the province’s handling of emergencies in remote Indigenous communities.
