Street Pastors Start Earlier as Clubbing Habits Change
A street pastor group in Shropshire says its work has changed over the past 15 years as fewer people go clubbing and late-night drinking habits shift.
Telford Street Pastors was founded in 2011 to support people during nights out and help calm violent or anti-social situations.
Patrols Now Ending Earlier
Volunteer Vicky Brain said the group has noticed that people are no longer going out binge-drinking or visiting nightclubs in the same way they once did.
Because of that change, the pastors are now carrying out patrols earlier than they used to.
The volunteers mainly work in Telford and Wellington on weekends, usually staying out until around 2:30 a.m.
Focus on Care, Not Preaching
Brain said being part of the group feels meaningful because volunteers know they can make a difference to someone’s night.
She explained that the role is about care and support, not preaching or discussing faith unless someone wants to talk about it.
She said helping people safely enjoy a night out gives volunteers a strong sense of purpose.
A Personal Reason for Volunteering
Brain said she became involved partly because her daughter used to go clubbing in Bristol.
She knew she could not help her own daughter when she was out in another city, but she felt she might be able to help someone else’s daughter if they got into difficulty in Telford.
Listening Without Judgement
Volunteer Asha Alex said people on nights out often open up to the pastors.
She said the group tries to show compassion, listen without judgement and give people space to calm down.
The pastors also provide practical help, including water for people who may have had too much to drink.
Helping People Stay Safe
Alex said the volunteers offer people a place to sit, breathe and gather themselves before continuing their evening or going home.
During hot weather and the excitement around the World Cup, she said some people forget to stay hydrated.
Because of that, the group has been taking out plenty of water bottles and lollipops to encourage people to drink more water.
Telford Street Pastors have spent 15 years supporting people on nights out, but changing nightlife habits mean their role is evolving.
With fewer people clubbing late into the night, the group now patrols earlier while continuing to offer compassion, calm support, water and a safe presence for anyone who needs help.
