Suspect Dies After Police-Involved Shooting at North Vancouver Mall
A suspect involved in a police shooting at a North Vancouver shopping centre on Tuesday has died from his injuries.
The BC RCMP issued an update at approximately 8 p.m., confirming that the man had been transported to a nearby hospital following the incident. Despite receiving medical treatment, he later died.
Police Respond to Westview Shopping Centre
RCMP officers were called to the Westview Shopping Centre on Westview Drive at around 1:30 p.m.
Witnesses said the incident began inside a McDonald’s restaurant, where a man allegedly held a knife to the throat of a female employee. Customers reportedly fled the restaurant as the situation unfolded.
Customer Intervenes During Knife Incident
Witness Arman Abadi said he had entered the McDonald’s to purchase an iced tea when he noticed a man behind the counter threatening an employee with a knife.
According to Abadi, he approached the suspect from behind, grabbed his hands and struggled with him. He managed to remove the knife and throw it beneath a table before attempting to restrain the man with assistance from another individual.
Abadi said the suspect claimed to have another knife. Concerned that he may still be armed, Abadi initially refused to release him. The suspect was eventually let go and reportedly ran outside.
Suspect Allegedly Attempts to Steal Vehicles
After leaving the restaurant, the man allegedly entered a pickup truck and attempted to steal it. When he could not start the vehicle, he reportedly placed it in neutral and allowed it to roll through the parking lot, where it struck another vehicle.
Abadi said the suspect then displayed a yellow box cutter before running toward a nearby gas station. He allegedly attempted to enter and steal additional vehicles as police arrived at the scene.
Witness Describes Chaotic Scene
Bahman Afshari, the owner of Westview Freshslice Pizza, said he came outside after hearing shouting and screaming.
Afshari reported seeing the suspect inside a pickup truck while holding a knife and threatening anyone who approached. He said the man then moved between several vehicles near the gas station while apparently trying to escape.
According to Afshari, the suspect later attempted to enter a police vehicle before an officer fired at him. Afshari described the incident as frightening and compared the chaotic scene to an action movie unfolding in real life.
He added that police arrived within minutes of the initial emergency call.
Independent Investigation Underway
Authorities asked members of the public to stay away from the area while officers continued their investigation.
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia confirmed that it had been deployed because the incident involved police use of force. The agency investigates incidents involving police officers that result in serious injury or death.
The confrontation at Westview Shopping Centre ended with the suspect being shot by police and later dying in hospital.
Witness accounts indicate that the incident involved an alleged hostage situation, multiple weapons and several attempted vehicle thefts.
An independent investigation will examine the actions of the officers and the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
