Unlicensed Alberta Driver Caught Travelling 230 km/h Near Fairmont Hot Springs
A 20-year-old Alberta man had his Audi impounded and received multiple penalties after allegedly driving at 230 km/h in British Columbia’s Columbia Valley.
According to B.C. RCMP, highway patrol officers from Cranbrook were monitoring Highway 93/95 near Fairmont Hot Springs when they noticed the Audi travelling at 230 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
The vehicle was moving so quickly that officers determined it would be unsafe to immediately attempt a traffic stop.
Police Locate Audi at Nearby Campground
Instead of pursuing the speeding vehicle, officers travelled to an area where they believed the driver had gone. Information provided by members of the public indicated that the Audi had entered a nearby campground.
Police later found the vehicle parked and unoccupied. Officers subsequently located the driver and suspected that he may have consumed alcohol.
The man was asked to complete a roadside breath test and agreed to provide a sample. Police said the breathalyzer produced a “WARN” result.
Driver Receives Prohibition, Tickets and Vehicle Impoundment
The Alberta driver was issued several penalties following the incident, including:
- A three-day immediate roadside prohibition
- A violation ticket for excessive speeding
- A ticket for driving without a valid driver’s licence
- A seven-day impoundment of the Audi
- Motor Vehicle Act fines totalling $959
- Additional towing and vehicle storage costs
The case was also referred to the Alberta administrative authority responsible for reviewing provincial driving sanctions.
The incident resulted in serious financial and driving consequences for the young motorist. In addition to nearly $1,000 in fines, the driver must cover towing and impoundment expenses and could face further administrative action in Alberta.
